![]() As a matter of fact, I opened the project and there. I did the same exact thing last year to a project. As soon as I turn off 3D in each layer, they're magically there. I've added drop shadow and stroke to the text, and drop shadow to the logo but they don't show up. You have about 1000 X more control of the look of your 3D text and shadows. I've tracked a shot and created a 3D camera, added a logo and text in the shot. Personally, I would have converted the camera move, lights and text layer to a C4D comp, done my extruding and shadow catcher there, then use C4D Lite and Cineware to do the final composite. ![]() 3D layers in the background can also receive. To get individual drop shadows per character, you need to enable the Per-character 3D option for the text animator, and add a light to create shadows falling from one character to another. You can do this by arranging your workspace as shown then just using the pickwhip to the camera in the main comp. In After Effects, drop shadow effects can only be applied to the entire layer, not to individual characters. If you did need to animate the camera in the main comp you'll have to add another camera, then tie its movement to both cameras in the nested comps using expressions. Turn off the temp background in both layers, on the top comp (Comp 1) turn off the shadow catcher, on the bottom comp turn off the extruded text, set the top comp as an inverted Alpha track matte for the shadow catcher, then turn the layer back on, set the blend mode to Multiply and add your background. Drop both comps in your Main Comp and open up both nested comps. Now duplicate that comp in the project panel. BTW the C4D renderer is a better choice but the setup for Ray Traced is the same. (See Layer styles.) This effect works in 32-bit color. For some purposes, the Drop Shadow layer style is preferable to the Drop Shadow effect. The quality setting of the layer affects the subpixel positioning of the shadow and the smoothness of the soft edges of the shadow. Parent that layer to the layer above if you need to move them. Apply a Color Correction effect to that layer to get your colored shadow. Set the layer below to Cast Shadows only, and set its Light Transmission to a high percentage. The plugin works based on the alpha channel like the regular drop shadow, but with results so gorgeous, they’ll be mistaken for 3D. Turn off cast shadows on the topmost one. 3D shadows are notoriously slow to render, so lots of tutorials and tools fake it. Set the 100% white shadow catcher solid so accepts lights is off, accepts shadows is on, duplicate the extruded text layer, set the duplicate to cast shadows only, Here's a comp with everything shown that is modified. Drop Shadow can create a shadow outside the bounds of the layer. Shadow Studio 2 could be the definitive plugin for creating realistic shadows in After Effects.
